New Vision Flutes

New Vision FlutesJeff Calavan of the Oregon Flute Store's Custom Flute Shop has created a pair of flutes that capture the spirit of the earth, ocean, and sky. These flutes play with a pure tone and create a wonderful pathway of discovery for your new songs...

Northern Beauty
The name of this flute speaks for itself. I wanted to create an F#m flute that resonates with both the earth and sky. This flute is crafted from a beautiful piece of air-dried figured walnut that I have had in my custom shop for years. The tone of this flute is warm and pure, and will easily exceed any player's expectations. The polar bear fetish is hand carved and painted using a dense piece of Oregon Yew wood. Yew wood finishes like glass providing a slick airway similar to glass. This makes for a very clean tone.
I enlisted my talented friend Alix Mosieur to bring the polar bear paintings to life by using her blend of indelible ink and paint.
I also, inlayed this flute with the big dipper star pattern using mother of pearl to provide a earth and sky connection. The flute is finished off with a set of brilliant blue beadwork. This beadwork is crafted using the very time-consuming peyote stitch.

Wave Runner
If you're looking for a fun flute here it is! My hand carved dolphin flutes have always been very popular and very fun to create. This Am flute is crafted using the finest Eastern Red Cedar providing a very clear tone that allows for volume. The jumping dolphin is carved from cedar and mounted on a base of dyed box elder burl. Our talented artist friend Alix Mosier painted both sides of the flute.  She uses a combination of indelible ink and paint to bring the dolphins to life. Just looking at this flute makes you smile.

My first flute from the Oregon Flute Store arrived today, a black bamboo flute in E by James Galliland. It plays with beautiful overtones and a wonderful, lively breath. It easily reaches two notes above the octave, bright and true. It doesn't seem to get as wet as soon as my hardwood flutes. I also have a hardwood E flute and while I love its tone this bamboo flute really moves me. It's a bit quieter and a bit softer and it invites the ear in to listen. This flute is also so very beautiful to look at, and it weighs next to nothing.

Thank you so much for all your help and guidance, for packing and shipping this flute with such care, and for giving artisans like James Gilliland the best possible kind of place to bring their gifts to the public.
