Brave Big River Low D Drone Flute by Russ Venable Art by Alix

Individually designed and crafted for exceptional tonal quality!

Brave Big River Low D Drone Flute by Russ Venable Art by AlixWe are thrilled to once again offer to you on a limited basis, flutes by Russ Venable. Russ is best known as the primary flute maker for Grammy award winner, Mary Youngblood. Mary has used his flutes extensively on most of her recordings. Russ also has the honor and distinction of having Mary perform with his flute at the grand opening of the Native American Smithsonian in Washington DC. This special flute was then placed on permanent display in the Smithsonian for all of us to view. We have represented Russ flutes over the years and have total respect for his talents. We will be showcasing Russ flutes on a first come basis on our Featured Product page as they come available.

We asked Russ Venable to build a large bore low Dm drone flute as a canvas for our artist friend Alix Mosieur. The result is this breath-taking masterpiece that blends the beauty of sound and vision together. The large size of this Eastern hard rock maple drone flute provides enough space for the complete re-creation of our longtime namesake artwork. The Indian flute player art has appeared many times over the years on our website and catalogs. Many have asked, “where can I get that?” and are surprised to find out that the flute player is only a small portion of the complete art piece. We commissioned Alix to paint the scene for us years ago. It is part of our personal art collection that has never been reproduced. Now, the entire scene is present on this magnificent flute. This is the only time we will reproduce the complete scene on any flute.

Native Flute Player

I purchased the Nest to carry and store my flutes. Last year we had some severe weather. I put my prized flutes in the Nest and stored them in the basement in case of a tornado. Well, the next morning the house was still standing but with the wind and heavy rain we had some flooding in the basement. My wife was the first to go down and when she yelled up to say we had water and my flute bag was sitting in it I got down there real quick. I unzipped the Nest fearing my flutes were wet only to find the inside bone dry. With a big sigh I unloaded the Nest and toweled off the outside. The bag is made with such quality construction it looks like new.
