Cedar Drone Flutes -The Maya

Cedar Drone Flutes -The MayaWe have commissioned Guillermo to create a special cedar drone flute made exclusively for the Oregon Flute Store. As a result the "Maya" was born. The "Maya" represents a modified version of a ancient Maya flute which was used around 200 BC to 1200 AD.

Cedar Drone Flutes -The Maya
The "Maya" is a six holed drone flute precisely tuned using the traditional Native American flute pentatonic minor scale. The chambers interiors are finished using Tung oil and the flutes exterior is finished with a non-toxic patina satin finish. This flute is silky to the touch. All flutes come with a stylized "bird" fetish.

Since each barrel is totally independent of the other, the flute may be played like a single barrel flute by simply positioning the lips on the right side of the mouthpiece so air enters only the right chamber. A slight shift of the lips to the left brings the left chamber into play and the sound flowing from the flute changes dramatically. The left barrel produces a drone tone which mixes with the notes being played on the right barrel creating a mystical sound that grabs the attention of anyone listening. Guillermo says that in the old times these were temple flutes to be played within the pyramids to connect with the higher self. We hope you enjoy playing them everywhere you go.

This dual chambered flute is a versatile and unusual instrument.

Our favorite part of this flute is the wonderful cleft mouth piece which makes playing the single or double mode a breeze.

I purchased the Nest to carry and store my flutes. Last year we had some severe weather. I put my prized flutes in the Nest and stored them in the basement in case of a tornado. Well, the next morning the house was still standing but with the wind and heavy rain we had some flooding in the basement. My wife was the first to go down and when she yelled up to say we had water and my flute bag was sitting in it I got down there real quick. I unzipped the Nest fearing my flutes were wet only to find the inside bone dry. With a big sigh I unloaded the Nest and toweled off the outside. The bag is made with such quality construction it looks like new.
